Cal State Universities don’t, but community colleges do.
BUT the cool thing about where I’m finishing my associate’s degree is one of the PE class available, which is a class called “Day Hiking” (No, really, it’s on page 126 of the college catalog). It’s honestly the only good aspect of this college I think there is.
The class (PHED C140) is supposed to:
Provide an introduction to basic day hiking techniques, first aid, and hike preparedness. Topics include wilderness, hiking in the desert and Eastern Sierra environment, public land management agencies, basic first aid, information resources, special considerations, nutrition and hydration, rules and regulations, and trip planning. Students should expect to participate in group hikes of 3-5 miles
Basically, it’s a class that covers everything I’ve ever known and done since I was a kid. It’s required that I go hiking now. Last year I hardly did any hiking, and now I have to. With needing one last PE class to go toward my degree, the fact that it’s something I want to do makes the notion of PE so much more appealing.
Oh, what a good year this is shaping up to be.
